Caring for Wool and Tailored Outerwear

Well-made outerwear rewards a bit of care. None of this is complicated — it just has to be consistent.

Storage

Use a wide, curved hanger that matches the shoulder shape of the coat. Wire hangers distort the shoulder line over time, which is one of the fastest ways a good coat starts looking cheap.

Cleaning

Wool needs air more than it needs washing. Spot-clean marks as they happen and air a coat out after heavy wear instead of reaching for dry cleaning every time — over-cleaning wears down the fibres faster than normal use does.

Wrinkles and Creases

Steam rather than iron directly wherever possible. Direct heat can flatten wool's natural texture; steam relaxes the fibres without damaging them.

Off-Season Storage

Store coats loosely covered with a breathable garment bag, never sealed plastic, and add cedar rather than mothballs — cedar deters moths without leaving a chemical smell behind.
